On the hunt for a job

Every time I decide I need a new job, I am reminded of the exhaustion from dealing with recruiters and HR people.

It's not all their fault.. but for the most part they seriously have no understanding at all to what I do, so I get tons of job offers for stuff that is just simply wrong. I feel like adding to my resume the following at the top:
-----------
I only write PHP, using MySQL, on Linux. I can't design. I don't like doing front-end. I'm not a college grad (see resume). I am not new at this (more than 10 years experience in my field.. again see resume). I don't want to move. I don't want to drive 3 hours to get to work. I won't consider contract work.
-----------
If only they could glean this amazing information from my resume (where most of it is quite clearly stated).

Those 1 in 10 opportunities I decide are right for me also tend to waste time. Asking me syntax questions in an interview? Are they serious? Why would I memorize syntax.. that's why we have the internet, so I can look it up. Besides especially writing OOP PHP, you don't need to know, you just find the right class. DUH.

So far none have come close to what I want, but my phone rings every few minutes, and I've had to keep records in excel to keep track of who I've spoken to and who I've decided against, and who I wish would never talk to me again.

All that while work is absolutely mind numbingly boring. I ran out of steam on my book after about 30 pages.. I know.. LAME. It's because I ran out of things to say. I know that sounds strange, as I thought I could easily fill a book with decent information about creating web sites.

Going to ToorCon (http://sandiego.toorcon.org/) in San Diego at the end of the month. Sadly I can only attend for one day, as the next day I have Match Competition for dancing.

Thanks for reading my whine!

Going OK on the book writing front

I re-read the first chapter, and realised I sound waaaaaay too preachy. Oh well, I'll go over everything a thousand time before the book is done anyhow!

I've got the basic structure down, but for writing chapters I'm skipping around a lot. I spend one day adding to the Intro, and the next writing the end for the chapter about Interface design and usability. Now I've started to worry about cohesion! Will it all hang together in the end? Hopefully!

I wish I could write fiction. I'm sure it would increase my writing skills to write from a perspective other than my own. Sadly I do not seem to have the imagination *sniff*.

That's OK I guess, I always have other people's wonderful fan fiction to keep me going!

5,500 words down, 54,500 to go..

Sad news indeed

Early this morning I heard about the passing of Don S. Davis. Extremely sad, my condolences go to his family, friends and fans.

I'm not sure what to write to give justice to the loss I feel at his passing.

Sadly today I read some of the comments we have received from fans since Sunday, and only one of them could be considered neutral, the rest were horrible blatant attacks against the company and staff (some of it quite personal). It's as if they were taking their grief out on us, even though we are hurt by his loss as well.
I took it upon myself to pen a reply to each fan, with the hopes of having them understand we meant no slight towards the great actor by not posting something immediately. Unfortunately we need to pass all content by management before posting it to the site, as it is the official site for the show, and many people are very concerned about the content on it.

Such a sad day!

--Kangamoo

Newish blogs

As most of you know, my old blog (jeninason.blogspot.com) has gone the way of the Dodo. I decided to split up my thoughts between two blogs (three actually, but the third one is angry me). One is about all things Science Fiction. Books, TV Shows, Movies, the whole nine yards. I will eventually post some things about Stargate there, but it won't be the focus.
The other blog is about web nerdy techie stuff. I'm going to try and keep it just about code I write, see or work on. The third one.. well.. it sort of explains itself:

Link time:
Musing about the world of Science Fiction

Writing Web Applications

I see bad drivers every day, here are their pictures

Hopefully some might find one or more of them mildly interesting!

--JG

Strangely enough..

So it turns out today might be the last day for my other blog. Nothing bad has happened, I simply am finding it too hard to guess what things to censor, and I'd rather just write for myself, about things I don't work on.

I'll keep everyone posted.

My actual blog is at: http://jeninason.blogspot.com for now at least.. although I am thinking of relocation to my own server and using wordpress. Will see!
